Tutorial 7: Embedded Vision and Real-Time Algorithms for Smart Cameras

Abstract

As the number of applications of computer vision grows, so does the need for a comprehensive coverage of various issues that algorithm developers face as they work towards real-time, embedded vision systems. This Tutorial is a focused, vertical introduction to this topic. It will build atop processor choices for real-time, embedded, computer vision and will cover vision algorithms specifically chosen for real-time operation on embedded processors. The algorithms to be covered include fast morphology, fast median, Gaussian filtering and pyramids, Hough transform, integral image, eigenfaces, and Viola-Jones face and object detection). Software optimization techniques and system-level considerations will also be covered. The tutorial will end with an overview of useful resources and emerging applications of this exciting field.

Speaker Biography

Branislav Kisacanin (SM IEEE) is a Member of Technical Staff at the TI DSP R&D Center in Dallas, working in the area of embedded vision. Prior to joining TI in 2007, he worked on development of vision-based automotive safety applications at Delphi Electronics and Safety. For intellectual property contributions at Delphi, Branislav was inducted into the Delphi Innovation Hall of Fame (2006). He has written or co-edited five books on mathematics, control theory, and computer vision, most recently "Embedded Computer Vision" (Springer, 2008). He co-chaired four IEEE CVPR workshops on embedded vision and human-computer interaction (RTV4HCI in 2004, V4HCI in 2005, ECV in 2007 and 2008). Branislav also held embedded vision tutorials at IEEE CVPR (2006), Embedded Systems Conference (2007), and TI Developers Conferences (2008). Currently, Branislav is a guest co-editor of the Special Issue on Embedded Vision of Elsevier's Computer Vision and Image Understanding (CVIU) journal, to be published in 2010. Previously, in 2007, he was a guest co-editor of the Special Issue on Vision for Human-Computer Interaction of the same journal. Branislav received his MS and PhD degrees in EECS from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1994, 1998) and a BSEE degree from the University of Novi Sad in former Yugoslavia (1992).
